Sandwich Generation Update

The Sandwich Generation Group had two meetings this spring. Houston Aggie Moms would like to thank the two hostesses who made the meetings possible: Bendi Saindon and Nancy Swanston.

Thank you for supporting the Sandwich Generation Group this year! This group will take a break for the summer and resume in the fall.

Ring of Honor Update

Ring of Honor had a great year and finished it off with a Derby Day Party at Marilyn Roach's lovely home. The hats were amazing, as well as the friendships, food, beverages, and games! Many thanks go to Marilyn, as well as this year's other hostesses: Cynthia Schwierking and Michele Vervoort. If you are interested in hosting or coordinating a ROH event in 2025-2026, please reach out to President-Elect Cyndi Ruiz-Mansfield at Cyndi.Ruiz-Mansfield@HoustonAggieMoms.org

The ROH ladies voted for their '25-'26 scholarship donations to support a scholarship for a Veteran Aggie. A student teacher scholarship was a close second! Thank you to everyone who voted for their choice by email and in person.

In April, the HAM Board voted to suspend ROH fees for 2025-2026. When renewing Houston Aggie Moms' membership, please fill out the additional ROH form if you have a former student, but there are no longer any additional ROH fees for this next year.

Ring of Honor is taking a break for the summer and will see returning members and welcome new members with 2025 graduates in the fall! Be sure and renew your HAM membership to continue getting information!

HELPING AGGIES IN NEED

This section includes TAMU and Aggie initiatives that can be important to our Aggie Moms and our Aggies. If you desire, these can be supported with in-kind or financial donations. Our Aggies and their friends may also find these services beneficial, so please share this information with them.

The information below will be added to our website under a new tab, "Helping Aggies In Need," during the summer.

12TH CAN FOOD PANTRY

Food insecurity/hunger is unfortunately on the TAMU campus. 12th Can is a student-led organization that works to help this problem with "pocket pantries" in various places on campus. Houston Aggie Moms has supported this organization with donations in past years. If you would like to donate to this cause, the top 2 QR codes on the graphic below will assist you.

TAMU CAREER CLOSET

Founded in 2015, the TAMU Career Closet is a collaboration of the TAMU Career Center and TAMU Student Government Association (SGA). It was created to enhance the professionalism of Texas A&M students while alleviating the financial burden that is inherently associated with launching a career.

At Texas A&M University, 42 percent of students demonstrate the need for financial assistance. When these students begin searching for jobs and internships, they require a professional wardrobe to obtain employment. Many of these students may not be equipped to purchase professional attire due to strict budgets. The Texas A&M Career Closet helps alleviate this burden by leasing professional attire to students at the subsidized rate of $5 to cover the cost of dry cleaning. The work of the Texas A&M Career Closet will ensure all students have equal opportunity to pursue the career of their dreams.

How Houston Aggie Moms Can Help

  1. Make a Financial Donation or an In-Kind Donation of Good-Condition Business Attire (that may have been outgrown and is still hanging in a closet?) Note that not all In-Kind Donations are accepted due to limited space. For more detailed donation information: Career Closet Donations
  2. Tell your Aggies about the Career Closet and have them share the information with friends. You never know who needs this information!

"AGGIE SHIELDS" TEXTBOOK LENDING LIBRARY

The cost of textbooks can be astronomical, especially for student veterans living on education benefits alone. The Aggie Shields Textbook Lending Library lends those costly textbooks to our Aggie Veterans for no charge.

Aggie Shields is a recognized student organization whose primary focus is to help alleviate the financial burden that Aggie Veterans face by providing them with textbooks at no cost through their Textbook Lending Library. In addition to textbooks, they have limited technical supplies available, such as iClickers and calculators. They also provide dependents/spouses with the opportunity to borrow any remaining unused volumes and supplies. The Textbook Lending Library is operated by the organization's volunteer student officers and members and relies solely on donations for operating costs and textbook purchases.

The library is housed within the Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center (MSC, Suite 1500) for the convenience of our veterans and the cost-efficiency of the organization, and also offers quiet study spaces, two open-access labs, a Smartboard, a bluetooth printer, and personal lockers for Aggie Veteran use.

How Houston Aggie Moms Can Help

Does your Aggie have textbooks, calculators, clickers, etc, that are no longer needed and you don't know what to do with them? This is the perfect home for those items. Pack them up in a box and drop them off at the front desk at the Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center (MSC, Suite 1500). Most used textbooks will get very little money when sold back to the bookstore. This is a wonderful home for those items to fill a need at TAMU! No appointment is needed to drop off textbooks and Supplies during open hours (listed below).

Graduation Cap & Gown Closet

Did you know that many Aggies choose not to walk for graduation because of the cost of the graduation regalia?

There is a Facebook group, Aggies Helping Aggies (AHA), that has realized this need and has recently organized as a non-profit in Texas. Originally organized to continue using crowdsourcing to fund Aggie rings, they also created a Graduation Robe Closet to help Aggies be able to walk at graduation. The official name of the recently formed non-profit entity is Aggies Helping Aggies, Inc., and their Texas Certificate of Filing for non-profit status is filing #805812450 (as posted on Facebook).

This group has organized a Graduation Robe (Cap/Gown/Tassel) Closet and helped over 40 Aggies walk this past weekend who would not have without the loan of the Graduation Regalia.

TC Langford (College Station) and Cindy Dobs Hon (Collin County) are the admins for the AHA Facebook group and are 2 of the 3 founding board members of the new non-profit entity. They also coordinate the Graduation Robe Closet. They can be reached at AggieRobeCloset@gmail.com

How Houston Aggie Moms Can Help

  1. Do you have a recent graduate who does not know what to do with their robe/cap/tassel? The Graduation Robe Closet can put it to great use! Email TC or Cindy at AggieRobeCloset@gmail.com to arrange to send or drop it off.
  2. Monetary donations for Aggie rings and costs to operate the Graduation Robe closet can be made online, and you will receive a tax-deductible receipt. More information on the AHA group is on this page, too. The link to donate is here: AHA Donations
  3. Spread the word! Let others know of this great service to help others who need loaned graduation regalia find this resource.
